I recently met Massimo Franceschetti, an engineering professor at UCSD. He has been looking into the propagation of information as a dynamic engineering problem, and I was very curious to hear from him about his work. I was able to understand some of it in my own visual terms.
Then Franceschetti asked me how I saw the difference between New York and Los Angeles. I credit him for asking that question at just the right point in the flow of our exchange, because I answered instantly and intuitively: “New York is all about angst; L.A. is all about irony.”
